Less than two years after its launch, our community kids’ surf club is thriving and we are mega chuffed and delighted to be able to support their success.
The Clwb Syffio Dyffryn Conwy was born out of a partnership between the community, local charity The Outdoor Partnership, Conwy County Borough Council and Surf Snowdonia. The aim was to create a community-centred club that would offer low cost surf coaching to North Wales kids who might not otherwise be able to access it.
Clwb Syrffio’s members – currently 26 boys and 20 girls aged from 8 to 18 – meet early every Saturday morning to train at our lagoon. We are very happy to donate our waves and equipment to the club for free, and we’re delighted that members of our coaching team give up their free time to coach the kids as volunteers.
The club was founded with an emphasis on inclusion and welcomes members of all abilities and aptitudes, but it also has a strong development ethos. We applaud its ambition to equip its young surfers with all sorts of life skills – surfing is really just the start of it.
An amazing fifteen of the club’s members have passed nationally recognised lifeguarding and first aid qualifications supported by the club and its partners. Six of those young people are now employed here at Surf Snowdonia in a variety of roles. We hope more will follow (some of them are just waiting to turn 16!).
Lucy Farrell, 13, says surfing with the club has helped her better manage the stress of exams and schoolwork. She told us: “I love it, it gives me true happiness. It really has given me a real break away from school. All the stress just goes when I’m out there on the wave.”
Adam, 17, started work at our wetsuit stores this summer and hopes to progress on to the lifeguard team later this season. He said: “We’ve learnt loads of skills in surfing, lifeguarding, first aid and customer services. It feels like a huge opportunity, and it’s such a relaxed, friendly place. It could definitely be a career starter.”
Club Secretary Jon Williams reckons the club has made a real difference to kids’ lives. He said: “Parents tell us all the time what a positive impact being part of the club has had on their children. For some it has helped them to focus more and knuckle down at school, for others it has helped to overcome fairly significant self-confidence issues. And now six of our members are over the moon to have jobs at a place and in an environment they really love. You could never put a value on the difference it has made to their lives.”
We are SO delighted to be part of this happy little inland surf community. Cheers to Clwb Syrffio and all the fantastic work they are doing. Long may it continue.
Membership of Clwb Syrffio is £12.50 per year per child and then £5 per week for coaching. All membership enquiries should be directed to the club here.
